Places to Visit At Coonoor

1.Sims Park
Sim's Park is in Coonoor, The Nilgiris, Tamil Nadu. It is an important tourist place to visit in Coonoor, at a height of 1780 meters above mean sea level. Here the maximum temperature goes up to 30 degree Celsius and the minimum falls to 5°C. The average rain fall of this garden is 150 cm. It extends over an area of 12 hectares of undulating land and possesses a number of natural advantages. This is a natural garden. Inside the park there are some beautiful terrace with colorful flower beds, lawns and rockeries also there are some Naturally occurring trees, shrubs, creepers and many unusual species of plants that have been brought from a variety of places around the world. The garden as some rare economic trees like Rudraksh- bead tree, Cinnamomum, Queensland karry pine, a handsome ornamental tree and graceful trees like Araucaria, Quercus, Phoenix, Magnolia, Pine, Turpentine, Tree ferns, Camellia this is all are as many attractions in this park. There is a glass house housing different ornamental plants and flowers. On the other side of the park rose garden are maintained. 2.Dolphins Nose
Dolphin's Nose Viewpoint is a tourist spot in Coonoor, The Nilgiris District, Tamil Nadu. Dolphin's Nose is well over 1,000 feet above sea level, it's about 12 km from Coonoor and is a spectacular spot to visit. The tip of the peak resembles a dolphin's nose, hence the name Dolphin's Nose. It is an enormous rock formation that is entirely unique. There are gigantic ravines found both to the left and right of Dolphin's Nose and there is a view of inspiring Catherine Falls with its continuing stream several thousand metres below which is located a relatively short distance away opposite of the Dolphin's Nose. 3.Lambs Rock
Lamb's Rock is a tourist spot in Coonoor, Tamil Nadu, India, on the slopes of the Nilgiri Hills. It is located at a distance of 8 kilometers from Coonoor. It has a view of the Coimbatore plains,tea estates and coffee estates.(Direction Map included at the end of the page

5.Tiger Hill Cemetery The Tiger Hill Cemetery is one of those 19th century graveyards which were mainly used by the British for their war burials. This graveyard is located in Coonoor and has burials dating back to the early 1900s. Majority of the tombs in this cemetery belong to the officers of the British East India Company and members of their families but there are few of them which belongs to the local people as well. Some memorials are having beautifully written epitaphs, sculptures and some are there with ornate designs. There is a stone gate with an arched gateway and a steeple at the entrance of the cemetery. It is a great place for lovers of history as they can also find a record book at the cemetery which shows all details of the burials at this site. In fact there are lots of tourists here who come from abroad in order to find their ancestor’s burial sites and to trace out their family roots. 6.Rallia Dam This is dam was built in 1938 and opened in 1941 still in excellent condition it is set up way up in the mountain around 6km uphill from the main road in the forest back ground, it is reservoir which fulfills the water to Coonoor.(Direction Map included at the end of the page)



7.Heritage Train The Nilgiri Mountain Railway is a railway in Tamil Nadu, India, built by the British in 1908,[1] and was initially operated by the Madras Railway. The railway still relies on its fleet of steam locomotives.[2] NMR comes under the jurisdiction of the newly formed Salem Division. In July 2005, UNESCO added the Nilgiri Mountain Railway as an extension to the World Heritage Site of Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, the site then became known as "Mountain Railways of India"[3] after it satisfied the necessary criteria, thus forcing abandonment of the modernisation plans. For the past several years diesel locomotives have taken over from steam on the section between Coonoor and Udhagamandalam.
